Sniffle, Sniffle

Yeah, that's the sound Matt and I have had for a couple days' straight now after both the Bears and the NU Wildcats lost big games.

Luckily our friend Jenny was with us this weekend to scream at the Bears game as we were all hoping we'd see another year like a few years back when the Bears lit up the Chicago skyline with hopes and dreams of Super Bowl glory. . .

It was very fun to hear from (and try to pick out) our fans-on-the-street, John and Carol, cheering on the 'Cats from San Antonio as they lost to Mizzou in a nailbiter of an Alamo Bowl.

We're comforting ourselves with dreams of next year . . .

A Jolly Holiday

We had such a nice Christmas holiday - starting off Christmas Eve morning right with John's cinnamon rolls, spending that afternoon with the Muller clan, and then opening gifts with our parents and Grandma Muller on Christmas Day. And yes, in case there was ever a doubt, we're still spoiled. Rotten. Our families were, as always, generous with their time, creativity and gifts. We're sleeping well this holiday season knowing how incredibly lucky we are.

Matt picked up the obnoxious-Christmas-sock gauntlet (yes, those are his HO HO HO toe socks in the background - you may want to click on the picture to get the full effect) thrown down by my cousin Beth last year (she performed quite well again this year with the red and white candy cane stripes) and we fear he has raised the bar for future years. I smell a throwdown. . .

Of course the little ones are adorable as always. Well, the big ones are pretty cute too, but you know, Christmas is for the tykes! My cousins Chad and Erin did a good job keeping Matt company as they lounged, chatted, wrestled - all of those normal Christmas Eve behaviors!

Snow Day

I had to capture the "perfect snow" today in our backyard, for posterity. Matt had a snow day from school and I worked from home (yes, really, I did work most of the day) so we didn't have to go outside and mess up the pretty snow.

Happy, Merry Thanksmas!

We had Thanksmas (my made-up word for Thanksgiving + Christmas, which we celebrate in between the two holidays) with the Schmiedeknecht side of the family on Sunday. The kids were very cute - just look at Anna's face! She's definitely our expressive one! (Note: Anna is my cousin's daughter along with her twin sister Ali below and Dylan, the little boy in the white shirt with Ryan.)

I think they had a good time, especially while playing the traditional "Twas the Night Before Christmas" game (or "Twas") as it's known to Mullers and Schmiedeknechts.

The basic premise of the game, for the uninitiated, is simple. 1. Everyone sits in a circle. 2. Everyone is given a wrapped present. 3. Someone (my mom, in our case) reads "Twas the Night Before Christmas" and each time he or she says the word "and" (about 20 times or so through the poem), everyone passes the box they have in their hands to the person on the left. 4. After the final "and" ("And to all a good night!"), everyone opens the gift they have in their hands. It's always a funny tradition as, even after about 20 years now, the adults get mixed up as often as the little ones.

The ornament of a house is the friends (and family) that frequent it.

I'm sure Emerson won't mind my amendment to his quote. . .we had such fun this past weekend with friends AND family as we celebrated Lisa and Baby Ruble, and I had my annual holiday tea tradition with the Moms!

I rode with Lisa's very cool friend Kathy up to Milwaukee on Thursday for the baby shower - a lovely evening hosted by a great group of Lindy's (Lisa's Mom's) friends. It was book-themed and completely adorable. I'll let Lisa blog about it and share pictures but I have to share this one - it's blurry but I've never seen a deer come up to a house like this! This was toward the end of the shower - evidently the little deer knew we were talking about storybook characters and wanted to add some authenticity!

We headed back to Chicago on Friday and had a girls' night of dinner at Cafe Spiaggia and dessert at Ghirardelli's. L-R: Amy (our very own matchmaker and Lisa's friend from HS), Kathy (Lisa's friend from HS and my very gracious ride to Milwaukee!), Kelly (a friend and fellow NU grad), me, Lisa (Preggers!), and Jenn (Lisa's sister, if you couldn't tell). We had such a nice time and fun to catch up with some old friends and realize some new and unexpected connections between members of the group.

Lisa, Kathy, Jenn and I headed back to Beverly for the night (it of course tickled me to have both guest rooms used at once). Mom and Carol joined us for breakfast Saturday morning and then the Moms and I headed downtown on the train for the One of a Kind Show at the Merchandise Mart and afternoon tea at the Peninsula. This is our fourth year of the tradition and I hope it's one we keep going for many, many years! They just keep getting better and better!

We finished off the weekend with pizza and game night with Lisa and Ed (soon to be Papa Ruble) Saturday night and then stuffed ourselves with breakfast at Lumes Sunday morning (Lisa ate for two, Matt and I each ate for three).

Such a great weekend - we were sad to see it end. But we are already looking forward to this weekend as it's Thanksmas (that's Thanksgiving + Christmas) with the Schmiedknecht side of the family this Sunday. Can't wait!

Yippee! Day After Thanksgiving = Christmas Decorating!!!

We haven't really decorated for the holidays in three or four years because our apartments were small and stuff was in storage, yadda yadda yadda. I'd been itching to do it ever since we bought the house (it was discussed in April where the Christmas tree would go).

So Friday morning we had a great time putting up the tree and the other decorations. Some of us had even more fun than others, as Ollie (aka "Crazypants") demonstrated by "posing" for pictures like one of those naughty cats you see on calendars and e-mail forwards. He's something else. After three days, though, we're happy to report that the tree's still standing and there have been no ornament fatalities (yet).

We also had fun with our fireplace mantle and we were especially excited to hang up the new stockings Mom Muller made for us and the kitties.

We also put the NU and U of C trees from our engagement party up in the dining room. Those and the ornaments we got at that party bring back some great memories!

First Thanksgiving

What a great treat it was to have Thanksgiving at our house around our dining room table. We had both sets of parents over, as well as Diane's Grandma Muller, Aunt Leila and Grandma's cousin Midge.

We had a great day of football watching, snacking and a FABULOUS dinner prepared by Matt.
He's earning quite the reputation as a home chef!

The picture on the left is of him in the wee hours of the morning working on the stuffing. Check out the Martha Stewart prep bowls - he's legit!

Fall Fun

Things were just blooming away when we last posted - and now it's getting cold and we've had to rake the lawn several times! Halloween was fun in the neighborhood, though we actually ran out of candy after over 100 trick-or-treaters (seriously) stopped by. Here are a few pictures of fall fun with Diane's cousin Ryan helping us rake, hanging out on the porch, and of course jumping in the leaves with Matt.

Grass. . . and Garden Surprises

We are really enjoying our outdoor space. The previous homeowner had at least two green thumbs and it's been such a surprise to see all of the perennials pop up and bloom each month (we first looked at the house in early March).

Matt's still enjoying having to mow the grass and he's really loving his new grill. The truth is we never thought we'd have a yard like this in the city and after eight years each of apartment living we couldn't be happier than we are walking around barefoot in the backyard.

Basement

Our finished basement has a family room area, a little wet bar area, a bathroom, and laundry room, as well as some concrete storage rooms. Matt instantly fell in love with his new theater space (he was testing the acoustics before we even made an offer). While Diane had to nix the idea of risers and recliner stadium seating, Matt's still got a lot of fun plans for this space in the coming years.

Until then, we're definitely enjoying it as-is for TV- and movie-watching, and we are looking forward to finding a carpet and new upholstery for the furniture soon.

We're very thankful to the previous homeowner for giving us a contemporary bathroom, and by doing so downstairs, we have the jet tub and standing shower we secretly wanted without having to sacrifice or interrupt the vintage flow of the top floors.

Upstairs

The master bedroom, two guest rooms, a bathroom and craft room are upstairs. They are all connected by an open hall space with built-in closets and cabinetry. We've still got plenty of projects up here too, ranging from window treatments and organization to a total overhaul of the bathroom decor.

The master bedroom is broken into two rooms separated by French doors. While we may someday take out the wall for resale, right now we're happy using the two spaces for a dressing room and what we're calling a "bed nook". The headboard is made from two of the house's original doors - we were so excited to find them in the garage.

The first guest room Matt christened "the Indiana Jones room" prior to our moving in, based on the much-loved furniture we planned to put in it. The brass bed is from Matt's great-grandparents' home in Montana and there's an Indian chest that was a birthday present to Diane from Matt and our parents a few years back. We also call it "the brown room" for obvious reasons; while we were painting, we all seemed to get hungry in this room as the paint looked exactly like hot fudge sauce in the tray.

Matt continued his room-naming in the second guest room. He named it "the Martha Stewart room" because it has traditional furniture (from Diane's grandparents' house) and a very special quilt handmade by Diane's Mom (our very own "Martha") as a 21st birthday gift.

Speaking of Martha, while Diane can't remotely touch her Mom when it comes to the craft stuff (but really, who can?), she likes to dabble a fair bit. So the craft room is Diane's "room of her own" where she can indulge her scary little ribbon fetish.

Finally, the biggest project of them all: the upstairs bathroom. We love the footed tub; can't say the same of the wallpaper and border. The main fixtures stay, the wallcoverings and cabinetry go. Matt's starting some of the plumbing work this week.

Main Floor

Welcome, c'mon in. We've had a lot of fun so far working on the main floor, which consists of the entry, living room, dining room, kitchen, den and powder room.

Still several projects to do and things to find but at least there are places to sit now (chairs were nonexistent on the main floor for pretty much the first month)! We love all of the moldings and woodwork, the funky original hardware on the windows, and of course the fireplace was a nice bonus prize.

We've been sitting in the living room more than we ever thought we would (there's no TV in there) and Diane's even been practicing piano a bit as there have been several requests for Christmas carols by December.

Hopefully by the end of the summer we'll have built-ins in here. We're thinking of stretching them along the wall surrounding the French doors (they lead to the den) and wrapping around the other wall as well, as we're already overflowing a bit.

The dining room is full of cherished family treasures from Diane's Great-Aunt Evelyn and Great-Uncle Clyde and their daughter Carol. Evelyn and Clyde made the dragonfly lamp, which hung above this same table in their house on Lake Geneva when Diane was a kid.

We are breaking in the kitchen slowly but surely. The previous homeowner did a nice job maximizing space so there are hidden cabinets, a pull-out pantry, and countless drawers for all our gadgets and serving pieces (not to mention shelves that hold most of the teapot collection).

Last on the main floor are the den and the little powder room. These are both on the to-do list; we're still putting things away in the den (to the extent that we've not taken any pictures of it yet) and we're planning on re-painting the powder room very soon.

DIY and Harper's Hiding Places

We spent the weekend after closing doing major DIY projects, including stripping wallpaper and painting the dining room, painting the living room, and painting all three bedrooms.

We had a LOT of help from our parents, thank goodness.

We had our only major paint misstep with the master bedroom dressing room - we were hoping for "Sahara Shade", we got nacho cheese. We've since repainted and is much more restful, not to mention palatable.

The following weekend, before moving all of our stuff in, we moved Harper (our feline fur-child) and, as he has done all of the other times we moved, he spent his first day going from hiding place to hiding place, storm-drill style.
